Final exam: Compare and contrast

     Compare and Contrast
It has been said, “Not everything you learnt is contained in books.” That is to say, we gain knowledge from everywhere. In this big world, there are lots of things to learn, we can either read from the books or learn it from our experience.
While we are strolling in the library, we can find various books from history to astrology. The books contain the knowledge of tens of thousands of people. We can gain knowledge from the book. Math, Science, Psychology, we can find almost everything that we can think of from the books, even how to cook. By reading the books, we can learn what others have experience, because the things that are written in the books are the very thing which the writer wants to tell the readers. Therefore, we learn the knowledge that has been experience by others, we are learning from their experience. There are some of things that we can’t learn from life experience, such as calculus. This kind of hard subjects that needs to be calculated carefully is rarely used in our lives, but we still need to use it in some professional fields, such as science.
However, we are the one who is going to practice the knowledge that we learn. We can also gain knowledge from our daily lives. Reading a book may not be so necessary. For example, a baby can neither read books nor understand what you tell him to do. But careful the things you do, children will see, and learn. As what we have learnt in the Confession by Augustine, he said that when he was an infant, he cries when he has the desire for something, he screamed for it. And when he finds out he can yell for his needs, he learned that he can tell people what he needs by getting their attention. There’s another example of learning from living experience. I’ve never seen my grandmother cooking with a recipe, but she can always make a table of delicious food. I wonder why she can do it, and she told me that, “The more times you cook the better they taste, and no recipe is needed.” If the dishes this time are too salty, she will remember the amount of salt that she has added and she will put less at the next time. This is what we call experience. What is written in the book may not be the best way for us. The taste of the author of the recipe may be different from us, so we need to try again and again to see what’s the best thing.
In my opinion, both learning from the book and gaining the knowledge for life experience is important. Perhaps the best way is to combine our knowledge from books and life experience. We can make what we read from the books into practice to see if the knowledge fits us. It’s because that what we read from the books is the experience of others, it may not work on us as perfectly as the writer. Therefore, we can try to use the knowledge from what we read, and if it fails, we can fix it and make it the right way that is suitable for us. The most important is we learn therefore we live. It’s not a shame for us to have failure, what matters the most is that we get better each time we fail. We study more carefully from the book when we fail the test, and we make it right the next time; we are more cautious of our lives when we make mistakes while practicing some skills. Knowledge is everywhere, in the books and everywhere around us.
